College Times

College Times stands as Canada’s oldest student publication, with a storied history that dates back to 1857. Originally founded as a biweekly newspaper, its early years were marked by a commitment to capturing the student experience in all its facets. The publication began under the name ‘Boys Times’ and later ‘Monthly Times’, when a single issue could be purchased for just five cents. The first editor of College Times was John Ross Robertson, a prominent figure who was succeeded by other distinguished editors, including Stephen Leacock, Robertson Davies, and Michael Ignatieff. Each of these individuals contributed to shaping the publication’s legacy and influence. The original motto, ‘Quidquid agunt pueri, votum, timor, ira, voluptas, gaudi, nostri est farroago libelli’, translates to ‘Whatever boys do, whether they vow, are afraid, express anger, please, or joy, in our paper you can find it.’ This motto reflects the publication's enduring mission to document and reflect the full spectrum of student life. Today, College Times continues to uphold its rich tradition while evolving with the times, offering a dynamic platform for student voices and a valuable chronicle of the ongoing college experience.
